Wreck This Journal: Secret Code

Seeing as my last Wreck This Journal post was a little sad, I thought I’d share a much more lighthearted series of pages this time around.  How about a little game?

At one point in the journal, there is a page that gives directions to hide a secret message somewhere in the book.  There are, of, course, a million ways to approach this so I had to think about it for a little while.  Besides the method of secrecy, there was the message to consider.  I wanted it to mean something special to anyone who might take the time to figure it out.  Finally, it came to me in the shape of a firefly, (or at least my best rendition of one):

Follow the firefly!

My little firefly shows up on various pages throughout my journal and each leads the way towards the secret message.  The last one shows up towards the very end of the book and leaves the rest of the journey to the reader.  Can you figure it out?  Click on the images to blow them up to full size and give it a try!

  3. What a unique way of hiding a message! At first, I thought it would be hiding in a pocket or pull-out section of your page. (I have been doing a lot of those with the scrapbook pages in my classes using ideas from a book called Magic by Jeannette R. Lynton.) I do like secret codes, though, ever since I was a kid, so this takes me back! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

    • My first impulse was to create a secret pocket, but then I thought it would cause a bulge, (and that’s not very stealth!). 🙂

      I love putting pockets on my scrapbook pages. That way when I look at them years from now, there will still be surprises to find. 🙂

  5. I’m amazed. Still and again. Your ability and time opportunity to create such wonderful ideas and play as if your inner child were in control, is wonderful. So at ease with yourself and your life. Makes me glad to know you.
    P.S. I thought, maybe if you had the time or the inkling, that you could share with me some of the crafty things you do and how you go about your “wreck your journal” thing, perhaps some insights as to how you blog and have gotten to know other bloggers. Maybe after May 25?

    • My inner child is in control most of the time, even when I’m busy being an adult. 🙂 I’ve learned responsibility and life are a lot more fun when you decide to laugh and find joy wherever possible. 🙂

      • It has been suggested to me that I find my inner child and let it play, at least every once in a while. It has been a very long time. I do catch a glimpse every once in a while. I’m hoping that after May 25, my battered and bruised and neglected child will trust me again. I miss “playing”. I think I used to be good at it 🙂

    • I have all of Smith’s books except “Living Out Loud,” (I’m hoping to find it a better price!). I just started “Finish This Book” and so far its just as fun and inspiring as Wreck This Journal. I love her philosophy of “reckless” creativity – its truly changed my life. 🙂

    I haven’t heard of this book before, but it sounds really interesting, I may try and seek it out! I do like things that get you to think differently, and out of your familiar patterns – I think it really helps writing, and all kinds of creative work in general..

    • Absolutely! 🙂 It’s always good to try something different and jump out of your comfort zone. That’s where creativity begins!

      It’s a popular book, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding it (I linked it to amazon, too!).
