Freshly Pressed Shock Syndrome

Standard

This week I was afflicted by an ailment I hope every blogger will get to experience at some point.  It all began on Thursday¹ morning when I logged into WordPress and saw something very familiar on the homepage.  I blinked to make sure I wasn’t imagining it, I read the title three times just to be sure, and then my eyes bugged out of my head.  Oh. my. goodness.  I pointed at the screen and shouted, “Hey, that’s my blog on Freshly Pressed!”  That’s when I knew I had Freshly Pressed Shock Syndrome or FPSS.

The nerd in me couldn’t resist taking a screenshot to celebrate!  Congratulations to all the other Freshly Pressed bloggers who probably have FPSS as well!

Symptoms of FPSS include:

  • failure to blink
  • the inability to close a gaping mouth
  • a constant shaking of the head in disbelief
  • uncontrollable squealing
  • rapid heartbeat
  • hyperventilating
  • involuntary jumping up and down
  • immense gratitude

What followed the initial onset of FPSS was an incredible and exciting influx of traffic on my blog.  I honestly never expected or believed numbers could go that high.  Just two days before, I was ecstatic with a higher than usual double digit hit count.  My new bar graph obliterated that previous victory into a teeny tiny sliver.  The funny thing is I was a little sad to see all my previous achievements blasted into oblivion, but then I looked at the total hit count again and got excited all over again.  Hmmmm . . . . perhaps I should add emotional confusion to the list of FPSS symptoms.

Adding to the chaos of rapid traffic was e-mail overload.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen that many e-mail alerts in all my life!  Having everything funneled through your e-mail is fine when there’s 7 or 8 comments on a post and a couple likes, but several hundred stuffed my mailbox faster than I could process them!  It was insane, yet so much fun!

When I got around to checking out the post that caused all the commotion, (The Best Souvenirs Are Free), it was amazing to see a virtual patchwork quilt of gravatars situated under the “Like” button. Thank you to everyone who took the time to give that extra click.  It made this whole process that much more meaningful.

My sincere thanks goes to everyone who left comments.  I am in awe of how many of you shared your beautiful stories and souvenirs, (keep them coming!).  It’s such an honor to have those memories on my blog.  We may never meet, but the creation of a common thread between everyone who joined in the discussion will never be forgotten².  At the moment I’m a little overwhelmed, but in the coming days I will respond to every comment.

One of the side effects I wasn’t expecting was the massive jump in subscribers. I really appreciate that extra show of support and find it so inspiring.  I hope future posts will keep you all coming back again and again.  My blog can be a little random, but I do strive to make it as interesting and fun as possible.  Thank you so much for adding me to your reading list!

I wish I could say “The Best Souvenirs Are Free” was totally my idea, but I have to give credit to my muse.³  My incredibly fickle and random muse put the idea in my head ten minutes before I was planning to leave the house for a writing session.  My day shifted an entire hour so I could snap the picture, but I guess the rest is history.  I owe her a big one, (Greeaaat).  Extra muse juice, perhaps?

Last but certainly not least, thank you to the WordPress gods and readers for giving me the chance to feel like a real writer.  May every blogger know the thrill of FPSS.

¹Actually, the hubbub started on Wednesday when Muse Juice was selected for The Daily Post.  Naturally, I broke out into a raging case of DPSS (Daily Post Shock Syndrome).

²Goosebumps are yet another symptom of FPSS.

³ FPSS also leads to unexpected groveling to your muse.

  1. Had to laugh with you at all the sensations you felt and more. I was FP’ed in March and went through similar emotions to the ones you describe, after I’d worked out what had happened to make my inbox explode!

I did some research on FP afterwards and realized that it’s the result of many things, all mixed in with not a small dash of randomness and luck. Right blog, right time, and right chord struck with teh FP reader(s). None of which is to denigrate any part of any blogger’s talent, skill or interesting topics, but there is a whole piece thjere that is beyond the control of the blogger.

I learned that tere are many bloggers oit there whose end goal is to be FP’ed. To be honest, I felt a bit guilty, lieki shoudl offer them my prize. I came to the conculsion that in theor place, if I had been trying to reach that goal and hadn’t succeeded, I’d might have stopped writing by now. I made a decision early on to write for myself and to share, not to get attention. The tsunami of FP hits came and fell away as fast (I guess i don’t blog enough or about topics that interest a lot of people) and it was huge fun finding out who my readers were too.

However a word to all all hopeful readers out there for whom it has never happened: if it happened to me,truly it could happen to you. And for those love the FP roller coaster ride. it’s not a case of lighting never striking twice in the same place, either – I know a blogger who’s been Freshly Pressed no less than three times!

Enjoy the experience, CB. But trust me, you would be a writer whether it had happened or not. Keep feeding the muse juice, and keep writing. 🙂

    • I started this blog to have a place to write. The last thing I ever expected was to be Freshly Pressed, which is probably why it caught me so off guard. 🙂 As the tidal wave subsides, I’ll keep writing as I always have . . . with joy and inspiration.

Thanks so much for reading and congrats on experiencing FPSS! 😀

  2. I loved your souvenirs post so much that I started back-reading in your blog which lead to one thing….I found out that I loved pretty much everything you were writing. That’s why I subscribed AND put you on my blogroll. My blog is just a baby (recently moved from blogger to wordpress) but I wanted everyone who stumbles across me to perhaps find their way to you as well. Thank you for your wonderful posts! I look forward to more!

I’m looking forward to checking out your blog! One of the best parts of FP experience has been exposure to so many new blogs via the like button “quilt” and comments.

  3. I can truly imagine your shock! 😉 But you deserved it! I haven’t found your blog before FP so, FP brought me here and I’m glad it did!
I’ve already said that your “Can you see your dreams?” totally hit me in the right time – it was exactly what I needed to read.
I’m truly looking forward to see more of your words, and actually curious about “Wreck this journal” related posts! It looks like it will be a lot of fun! 😀
Enjoy the FPSS and have a nice day!

  4. Congratulations! I’ve wondered, when I’ve read some FP post, what it might be like, so this was interesting reading. If all these new subscribers keep coming back to your blog, that will really increase your page view stats.

    • A few weeks ago I read a post on another blog about being freshly pressed. It never occurred to me that it would soon happen to my blog. I am so encouraged and inspired by the influx of traffic. Now more than ever, I want to write and then write some more. Hopefully, a few readers will join me! 🙂

      Thanks for the congrats!

  5. Well, you’ll probably never see this, buried in all the adulation (justly deserved I must honestly say 🙂 ), but I did want say, well done, and couldn’t happen to a nicer person. Bravo my friend!

Hi CB! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I logged into my WordPress account this morning and noticed my picture on the top right corner. It didn’t occur to me until a good ten seconds after that I was on Freshly Pressed! I stared at the screen unbelievingly, and proceeded to nerd out with a screenshot like yours. Haha.

Incidentally, I clicked on your post “The Best Souvenirs are Free” when it appeared on FP, found that I rather liked your writing style, and subscribed to your blog. Imagine my surprise when I saw your comment on my post.

Congrats on being featured on FP twice and keep up your lovely writing! 🙂

  7. Congratulations once again and thanks for a scoop on what it’s like to be FP’ed. I’m always curious about the behind the scenes aspect of it. When I read this post I felt like a 7 year old sister to a 16 year old beauty pageant winner peaking through the curtains to spy on her. What DOES happen to the lucky few selected?

You definitely deserve the honour but this doesn’t mean you’re officially a writer- you’ve always been one. This is recognition for your talent, insight and ability to entertain your readers in an intelligent way. Kudos to you; keep up the FANtastic work!

    • Thanks!

Your sentiments are so true. We write for the sheer love of it and we’d do it even if no one showed up, but it sure is nice when someone does. 🙂

Thanks for the congrats and I’m looking forward to checking out your blog!
