Photography Challenge: Love

Standard

Capturing something as abstract as emotion can be a difficult feat, but I found the challenge to be invigorating.  As usual, my muse took me on a path I did not expect as she reminded me past efforts can be reinvented into new adventures, while hidden treasure waits to be discovered in the creative soul.

Prompt: Capture a moment of love

For the last seven years, I’ve walked to work almost every morning.  About a block from my house I always remember to look down, so I can see a heart that’s carved into the pavement.  I can’t help but wonder if LH and KH are still together, (the sidewalk is dated 1986).  I hope so.

Prompt: Capture something sensual

No matter how many times I tried to play with this prompt in my surroundings, my mind kept returning to a past shot I took of Rodin’s masterpiece, The Kiss.  I’ve seen more than one version of this sculpture and it always makes me think of the word, “sensual.”  Maybe I’m cheating a bit, but sometimes an older picture deserves to be new again.

Prompt: Capture something hidden.

I had a worse than usual bout with insomnia this week, but it lead to something quite remarkable.  A drawing tablet I’ve had in my closet for at least 10 years wandered onto my table along with a box of crayons.  The girl who never believed she could draw, discovered a hidden love for filling a page with whimsical art.

  1. Beautiful! You’re so full of wonder! That’s totally what the project is about! And of course, there’s no such thing as ‘cheating’ on this challenge – it’s completely flexible! I’ve bent the ‘rules’ a few times already as well. You’ve gotta just keep listening to your heart ❤

    • I love how this challenge has opened so many new doors. Thank you so much for posting it – the inspiration and discovery has been incredible!

Glad I’m not cheating! Hahaha! It was so nice to play with that old image and make it something beautiful again.

    • Ooo, interesting perspective! 🙂

I’ve always loved petroglyphs that show the outline of a hand. To think someone left mark thousands of years ago is just amazing. I always wonder what they looked like and who they were on they inside.

      • Aboriginals are famous for their dot paintings usually depicting the dreamtime through symbols and dots. It was the dots that reminded me of their work more than the hand. It’s interesting how we have different perspectives isn’t it. I’m no artist but I love your picture. 🙂

  2. This would make an interesting salon exercise, i think. One might consider raking the challenge further, and proscribing what might be chosen to depict love–to force us to think outside our immediate and comfy notions…the way we do when we write an extended metaphor…. What do you think?

    • The originator of the challenge has posted some really interesting shots as have a few other bloggers who have joined the challenge. Hmmm . . . I may have to post some of their links next week. It’s a great challenge that really stretches the creative muscle. 🙂

  3. I, too, would hope that LH and KH are still together. The romantic in us? I’ve seen the sculpture several times, too, and I agree with you that it is “sensual”-tangible, almost. Or maybe it is my imagination? Your drawing is very cool-inspirational to wonder about the “heart in the hand”-giving it away? Displaying it? Finding it? Hmmm . . .

    • Sometimes I wonder if I’m too much of a romantic sap with that heart! What if it belongs to two best friends who both had a last name that starts with an “h” or what if they are close siblings?? The possibilities are endless and the warm, fuzzy feeling priceless. 🙂

The heart in the hand is something I generally associate with folk art. I’ve seen various versions of it and have always liked it, (my drawing is just an interpretation of something very traditional). To me, its a symbol of giving love, but I love all the different interpretations it has inspired. 🙂
