Listening to the Wall is a series dedicated to showcasing pieces of student art that helped create an incarnate of the Lennon Wall in my classroom.

Reconstructing the Lennon Wall
I just recently ran into the student who created this piece. While all grown up, her positive spirit remains firmly intact! Her idea of intertwining two hands has always struck me as beautiful.
This piece almost didn’t make to the wall! Water stains tried to smear the colors and pucker the paper, but luckily a little time pressed in a textbook saved it. This student created the earth using a very abstract style, but the message still comes through loud and clear.
Two students came together to create this piece. Look closely and you’ll see two hands instead of one. There’s nothing like a little unity to carry the message of peace.

Would have been nice to have a teacher like you when I was young. 🙂

CB, the entire Lennon Wall series is wonderful and inspiring. School teachers are heroes to me. This story is my Exhibit A for this belief.

Hands are usually a popular theme for Lennon Wall pieces. I’ve made more than a few using outlines of my hand, too! 🙂

I love the sentiment in the second piece: “Light up the world in a time of darkness with peace.”

No words, yet, to hold up my wall. I need to move it to a different location.

Me, too. I was so sad when the student told me about the water incident. At least we were able to save it! 🙂

Wonderful! How will you have the wall space to display all these pieces, plus the new ones?

An entire wall in my classroom is dedicated to creating the Lennon Wall. Every year, old pieces are slowly taken down and replaced with new ones. 🙂

Looking at these wonderful pieces of art, I realize that not only have you supported and encouraged and allowed your students to find their voices, you have also nurtured and witnessed their creativity by encouraging them to express themselves via art. Perhaps they will not have to free themselves of the burden of thinking that they are not creative, thanks to spending a year with you. What a wonderful gift!

If I teach them anything, I hope its to trust they are vibrant thinkers that are creative in their own unique way. 🙂

On the first day back to work, a few students were roaming around campus and a couple stopped by to see the wall. That tells me right there that I’m doing something right!
