With Wreck This Journal essentially complete, I was starting to worry about finding a new outlet for my reckless creativity. I had a couple of false starts with other books by Keri Smith, but my muse and I could not find the same groove as we did with WTJ. Finish This Book, Mess, and This Is Not A Book are all amazing sources of inspiration, but I realized I wanted something whimsical and challenging without the threat of sticky fingers or dirt-stained pages. Of course, destroying things was fun, but I’m ready to try something else.
While perusing shelves in my local bookstore, I came across a little book called The Scribble Diary by Lisa Currie. As soon as I paged through it, I knew I’d found my new project. Each page offers unique ways of recording thoughts, experiences, and opinions, while also encouraging creative expression. Currie uses an interesting fusion of questions, prompts, and visual cues to spur creativity in both written and visual formats.
Just as I did with Wreck This Journal, I will be featuring pages from my Scribble Diary on a weekly basis. I plan on working through the diary in order (quite a departure from the random nature of WTJ) with the hope that different prompts on each page will inspire me to think about my day or week with a perspective I hadn’t previously considered.
The inaugural page of my Scribble Diary explores everything from gossip to little victories to what I’m reading.
My favorite thing on this page was the challenge of recreating the cover of the magazine I was reading at the time. I didn’t have a pencil handy to create a “rough draft,” so I just had to jump in with a pen and hope for the best. It’s not a masterpiece, but I’m proud of it anyway! This little exercise was a nice reminder that perfection is sometimes overrated. As I head into revising and editing two different writing projects, this is an important concept to keep in mind. Fate must have realized I need this message thoroughly embedded in my subconscious!
This page also clearly demonstrates that I’ve never met a box of crayons I didn’t like. I suspect every page will be decked out in color, especially since I bought a new box of crayons specifically for this project. The art of coloring has always played a special role in my creative life and I can’t wait to see how it manifests itself on the pages to come.
Stay inspired!

That vertical line changes on every page. It’s fun how it asks you to evaluate your day in such different ways. 🙂
