For My Friend

We must have seemed odd
to those who passed by
Opposites in every way
except on the inside
No need to explain Party of One
I understood you,
and you understood me
as no one else could
Over countless cups of coffee,
we pondered the meaning of life
and other silly things
And let’s not forget the music,
Junip and jazz still sing in my head
We read Maisie Dobbs and F. Scott Fitzgerald,
along with Willa Cather and Steinbeck, too
Ah, the books we treasured
and the stories we shared
I don’t have your picture,
but I’ll never forget your face
Nor how you taught me
the real source of strength
Without you there is an empty space
Thank you for being my friend,
until the very end

Recently, a dear friend of mine passed away. While the sadness is sometimes overwhelming, so is the joy I have in the memories of the moments we shared.  Our friendship was something really special and I already miss it.

  1. My heart is so touched by your poetic expression regarding your precious friendship. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful, emotional and sensitive post with us, CB. ♥ Love and Light to you in this time of transitional grief. ♥

    • The only way I knew how to work through some of the grief was to write. I pulled out my journal the night he passed away. It’s not easy losing such a good friend, but I do find comfort in knowing he is close by in my memory.

    • We had a friendship that was hard to explain to people on the “outside.” It didn’t make any sense that we connected, but we did and it’s one of those relationships I’ll always be grateful for.

I am so sorry to hear this. I didn’t know him very well but he was always so sweet and kind and even going through his treatment he was still such a dear. What a light he left behind as even those who knew him little are touched by his spirit. May your many memories bring you comfort.

  2. I know well the empty place in your heart and soul that his passing leaves behind. You wrote a beautiful tribute, not just to him, but for all of us who’ve lost a dear friend. I am wishing you a beacon of light for the dark places.

    • Thank you for the light. Yesterday was a hard one as I went to a place where a lot of people knew him. Everyone was so sad, but at least I wasn’t alone in grieving. At the same time, it was so wonderful to see that so many people cared about him.

    • Writing really help with the grieving process. I’m now at a point where I can think of him fondly without the overwhelming sadness. Losing a friend is never easy, especially when that friend was such a wonderful person.
