The beach has never been a favorite thing of mine as I’m pretty much allergic to the sun. However, when the sun doesn’t burn quite so bright and heat begins to cool, a walk on the beach becomes something beautiful and soothing to me. The waves sing a calming song and the sand tickles my feet giving my thoughts nothing to do but wander in the wind.

Deep in thought, caught in the thrall of questions, answers, anxiety, and a million little details. The birds are singing, the sun shining, and a brilliant shade of blue hangs overhead. Yet, the endless circle of things to come and things undone makes the present something missed rather than embraced. Is it flawed design or perhaps something to be realized before it’s too late?

Sometimes the most beautiful scenery isn’t right in front of you, but rather where you least expect it. While strolling through the Japanese Garden in Portland, I noticed a maple tree that seemed small and ordinary. Blush colored leaves drew me closer and feather like branches made me stay. It wasn’t until I kneeled down to tie my shoe that an incredible view caught my eye. This little maple tree so unassuming from the top was actually an incredible cathedral of beauty from underneath. Lesson learned, always take the time to look at things from every perspective.

The mountains surrounded everything and they were majestic, but the tiny little flowers caught my eye. The clouds whirled overhead and the wind pushed through the grass, letting the flowers dance. Such a lovely moment in a beautiful place.

In northern Wisconsin there’s always something flying around up above and through the trees. Robins, blue jays, hummingbirds, and hawks all constantly glide overhead and rustle the leaves. For me, though, it was always about the butterflies. I loved how their wings glowed in the sun and how gently they fluttered through the air. They invite you to take a deep breath and just be present. Take time to touch a soft flower petal or taste a just picked blueberry.
