Photography Challenge: Insight

Standard

The prompts I ended up working with this week all seemed to ask for little insights into myself. Between old memories, self reflection, and a moment of peace, I continue to be amazed at how the practice of photography continues to revolutionize how I look at the world.

Prompt:ย Capture a quiet space where you feel at peace.

The calm before a storm is always a moment where I take a deep breath and absorb the stillness. ย I took this shot twenty minutes before a huge dust storm exploded across the landscape.

Prompt: Record a smell that reminds you of a favorite memory.

The smell of green onions always takes me back to my grandparents’ house in the summer. ย We’d spend all day swimming in the lake until Grandma called us in for dinner. ย She used green onions in a lot of her recipes, including her delectable meatloaf. Whenever I catch a whiff of that scent I feel the cool lake water on my skin and I hear Tom Brokaw on the evening news while Grandma sings in the kitchen.

Prompt:ย Take a self-portrait to express your feelings today.

This prompt is a little tricky because I don’t post my face online. ย My mother can vouch for the fact that I do not photograph well! ย So, to cross this item off the list, I decided to draw a self-portrait and photograph the result. ย If she looks a little familiar, its because I modeled my portrait after a character in one of my favorite books, Little Miss Sunshine, (by Roger Hargreaves).ย This is a nickname a few people have given me over the years as I am generally happy every day!

  1. Yay!!! Love the portrait!! And I really like the first picture-calm before the storm. I love storms! Maybe because we don’t get many here? Maybe because it is a break from “warm and sunny”? Anyway, I’m glad to see your “self” made it online ๐Ÿ™‚ Did you plan any onions?

  2. I really, really love the little insights you share about yourself. Oh, and based on the images I’ve store in my Pirate mind of who you are, based on what you share and what I’ve gleaned, your portrait is spot on. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. There is beauty in a storm if we only pause long enough to see it. I love your first photo!

Both my grandmothers and my Mom grew green onions in their garden and used them in their cooking so the scent of onions brings back many memories of them and especially their cooking.

As for Little Miss Sunshine, this seems appropriate because your blog posts always bring sunshine to my day! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I am particularly taken with the first photo. It reminds me of the Lennon Wall theme…a lone branch standing tall against the oncoming storm, refusing to cower before an obviously stronger force, staying true to itself. Great shot!
