Of late, I’ve been experimenting with single line haiku, (or monoku). This is largely a manifestation of contemporary haiku in the English language, but maintains it’s inspiration from original Japanese haiku (which was largely written in single lines of vertical calligraphy).

Monoku uses little or no punctuation and strives to create multiple meanings that change depending on how the line is read. This allows for more abstract forms of metaphor and imagery. At the same time, simplicity and focus on a singular experience is still emphasized.

In The Seam

Shadows meet light,
where fate begins
The arches call,
cobbled paths warn
Wits be mindful,
for traps seek prey
Between the two,
the journey waits
